Dubbed “the father of Pan-Arab journalism”, journalist and publisher Yasser Hawari’s career spans more than fifty years in the world of press. From the London School of Journalism he was spotted by publisher Said Freiha and subsequently appointed editor in chief of weekly magazine “Al Shabaka”. His vision revolutionized the local press after he implemented a new and dynamic formula that placed heavy emphasis on images and investigative reporting. After “Al Shabaka” he continued the pioneering spirit and created new titles “Al Ousbouh Al Arabi” and “Al Diar” which incorporated a new concept in delivering information to the Arab world. In 1974 he survived an assassination attempt after a bomb was placed in his office. He left Lebanon for Paris with his family in 1976. There, he launched “Kul Al Arab”, of which he was also editor in chief, and founded monthly French language magazine “Arabies” followed by Trends, a monthly English language magazine. He then went on to found MediaQuest, a company aimed at building bridges between East and West through the medium of television and publishing, with offices in North Africa, Europe and the Middle East. Yasser Hawari is married to Leila, who he regards as his soul mate and muse. The interview with Ricardo Karam took place in Paris, France.
