Bahia Hariri 20/09/1996

A highly active personality in Lebanese political life, a member of parliament, a good will ambassador to UNESCO, President of the Parliamentary Commission for Culture and Education, Hariri is also involved in regional politics as the Vice-President of the Commission for Women at the Arab Inter-parliamentary Union. A dedicated champion of women’s rights, she has constantly promoted the status of women in Arab society, campaigning for the adoption of laws protecting women and contributing to their emancipation. Hariri stole the hearts of the Lebanese during the Cedar Revolution when she took a makeshift podium to address her slain brother, former Prime Minister Rafic Hariri, at his nearby grave in the courtyard of Al-Amin’s mosque. Referring to his elusive miracle, the miracle of national unity, of Christian-Moslem unity, she urged the crowds to pledge their loyalty to Lebanon, rebuilt from the rubble, and never again to be torn apart by civil war. The interview with Ricardo Karam took place in Beirut, Lebanon.
