Lebanon’s former president who was considered by many as a moderate. Gemayel grappled with grave problems but was unable to lead Lebanon to peace. Faced with two occupying armies, extensive violence as pro and anti Syrian groups fought each other, as Druze and Phalangists engaged in a bitter battle Gemayel also came under intense US pressure that resulted in the still born non-belligerency agreement signed with Israel. At the end of his tenure Gemayel moved to the USA as lecturer and fellow at Harvard University. He returned to the country in July 2000 and has resumed a political role.
