Luciano Pavarotti 23/04/1998

Luciano Pavarotti is an internationally recognized Italian tenor whose ringing, pristine sound set a standard for operatic tenors of the postwar era. Like Enrico Caruso and Jenny Lind before him, Mr. Pavarotti extended his presence far beyond the limits of Italian opera. He became a titan of pop culture. Millions saw him on television and found in his expansive personality, childlike charm and generous figure a link to an art form with which many had only a glancing familiarity. Pavarotti achieved pop star status with his rendition of Nessun Dorma the theme song of the 1990 FIFA world cup in Italy. He was part of the Three Tenors concert held on the eve of the world final with fellow tenors Domingo and Carreras, which became the biggest selling classical record of all time. Pavarotti made appearances at well attended outdoor concerts in London, Paris and New York. His performances achieved high sales reaching gold and platinum and he was a winner of many Grammy Awards. In July 2006 he underwent surgery for the cancer in New York, and he had made no public appearances since then. The maestro of Modena died at his home in northern Italy, on September 5th 2007. He was 71 years old. The interview with Ricardo Karam took place in Bilbao, Spain.
