A true believer and proponent of peace, a shining contrast to a world dominated by spiraling violence, Mayor, a bio-chemist by profession, served on various medical and scientific committees and held ministerial roles in Spanish governments. As Director-General of UNESCO from 1987-1999, Mayor displayed a passion for humanitarian work and promoted multi-lateral solutions to global issues. He established his faith of working democracy and peace built through education, science and culture, and in the process reforming the institution.
