Human rights activist and widow of former French president on whom she held considerable influence, Mitterrand is an independent and ambitious woman who based her life solidly on the left. Pursuing non-obligatory military service, a wider net of social security, the creation of full employment and the export of the ideals of the French Declaration of Human Rights, she promoted a co-operation between parties of the left worldwide. Assisting women and children Mitterrand founded France Freedom which promotes her concerns and builds schools in developing countries.
