   Video
Popularly seen as the embodiment of the conscience of France, a champion of the poor, homeless and unemployed, his courage and determination in the French Resistance, serving the threatened and personally smuggling them out of France, this Roman Catholic priest set down a role he would play for the rest of his life. As a Member of Parliament after the war, he concentrated on poverty and homelessness and founded the Emmaus movement known for its self-supporting communities of homeless people. Regarded by many as a living saint, l’ Abbé Pierre has preached by example and was awarded a higher order of the Legion of Honor in 2001. Born Henri Antoine Grouès in 1912, he passed away on January 22nd, 2006. The interview with Ricardo Karam took place in Paris, France.
